The Razor Peace Treaty: A No-Nonsense Guide for PNW Men

If you are a man living in the Pacific Northwest, whether you're navigating a job site in Everett or an office in Lynnwood, your skin is constantly battling the elements. I see it all the time: painful razor bumps, persistent inflammation, and skin discoloration. If this is you, it’s time to stop fighting your face.

The Shave: Going with the Flow

First thing is first: you have to shave toward the grain of the hair, never away. I know the temptation is to go for that "super close" shave by going against the grain, but all you are doing is creating a massive traffic jam in your pores. When that hair is cut too short below the surface, it has nowhere to go but back into the skin—and that is where the trouble starts.

The Prep: Soften, Don't Boil

When you prep your face, use a warm towel, not a hot one. We are trying to loosen things up and open those windows (pores) gently; we are not trying to boil a lobster.

If you have a stubborn ingrown hair, don't dig at it. Use that warm towel first to soften the area, then take a sterile needle or even a toothpick to gently lift the hair out. Just a lift—no digging. This allows the bump to go down and the skin to heal. Honestly, if you are prone to inflammation, switching to a high-quality electric shaver is one of the best moves you can make to stop the bumps before they ever start.

The Finish: Seal and Protect

When you finish, use a cool towel to close those pores back up and follow it with a light moisturizer. But here is the part most Washington men skip: Put on an SPF 30. Please do not let the Washington clouds fool you. The gray sky might block the glare, but those UV rays cut right through the overcast like a hot knife through butter. They will damage your skin and lead to long-term discoloration if you aren't protected.

Stay smooth out there and take care of your skin. It's the only foundation you've got.
